I design and hand make colourful dyed acrylic jewellery in my studio in Brighton. I studied Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics BA (hons) at Brighton Polytechnic, graduating in 1991.
The shapes and colours of the ‘Weave’, ‘Seed’ and ‘Grid’ collections are inspired by mid-century textile designers such as Lucienne Day and Joanne Groag. I love their joyful shapes and colour combinations.
The black graphic shapes with a pop of colour of the ‘Balance’ collection reflect the influence of abstract artists including Mondrian and Miro.
The 2022 ‘Stack’ collection is my response to the ‘Family of Man’ sculptures of artist Barbara Hepworth. Curving forms, etched lines, and holes are elements used in the construction of the pieces.
I endeavour to push the boundaries of what can be done with my chosen material. I experiment with textured surface patterns and innovative ways of joining components. Many of my designs have hand etched lines on clear acrylic which is dyed and polished back to reveal the coloured pattern. I use a laser cutter or bandsaw to cut out shapes from sheet acrylic, and hand make all ear wires in silver. All designs are highly finished to give a precious feel.
Collections of my jewellery have been sold in several Museum Exhibition shops: ‘Matisse Cut Outs’ at Tate Modern 2014, ‘The American Dream: Pop to Present’ at the British Museum 2017, ‘Space Light Colour: Rana Begum’, at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts 2017
and 'Postwar Modern: New Art in Britain 1945-1965' at The Barbican 2022.
